  Breeders’ Cup 2018
November 2 and 3
Churchill Downs

This is the only posting for both Friday, November 2nd  and Saturday, November 3rd.

Introduction. While there are 14 Breeders Cup races this year, and since the Classic could be the best betting race on the entire Breeders Cup card, here is some advice - - and, in fact, the only advice that will be offered.  Do not run out of money - - save some for The Classic. This is a wide-open race - - winning tickets will pay. So, decide how much you will set aside for The Classic before you make any wager on Friday.
  This wallet will save about $40 to wager on The Classic - - merely because a cashed ticket will pay handsomely.

No Frills.   This blog contains no cookies, no links to other sites, no advertising.  The blog was started so that my friends did not have to phone during the Saratoga meet.

Your Comments.  Many thanks to those of you have commented.  As you know, unless a unique perspective is contained therein, those comments are not posted.

And finally, good luck to all.

Weather Watch.   The early forecast is for heavy rain on Wednesday and Thursday, continuing into Thursday evening, then a 20% chance of showers on Friday morning. The weather improves after 8 a.m. on Friday.  However, that heavy rain could dump as much as five inches before Friday morning.

Friday Churchill Race No. 1.  Post time 12:55 P.M. Eastern.  An 8 ½ furlong dirt race for fillies and mares.  Purse = $90K.
Pass.  This is a short field.  No selection, no wager.

Friday Churchill Race No. 2.Post time 1:28 P.M. Eastern.  A 6 furlong sprint dirt race for maiden two year olds.  Purse = $82K.
When handicapping most races, some feature will stand out to help make the decision.  In this race? Eh - - not much at all.  The pick is #2 “Admire” (6-1) for two reasons: (a) The colt fetched $360K in the sales ring, and (b) His maternal grand dam “Lady Cerise” dropped a whole bunch of winners.  The wagers:  $3 Win and Place #2, then $1 Pick 3:  2 w 6 w 7, and finally $2 Double #2 with #6.  Total = $9.

Friday Churchill Race No. 3.  Post time 2:02 P.M. Eastern.  An eight furlong dirt race with a purse of $86K.
First things first, i.e. #1 “Casses Story” (5-1) hates wet tracks. If this track is wet, the trainer might as well scratch this horse.  Next, #2 “Archanova” (8-1) has no early speed, something needed in an eight furlong race. The pick is #6 “Westerland” (10-1) from trainer Bill Mott and jockey Jose Ortiz.  No, do not expect 10-1 odds on this son of “Frankel”, but 5-1 would be nice.  The wagers:  $3 Win and Place #6, then $2 Double #6 with #7, and finally $1 Pick 3:  6 w 7 w 8.  Total wagers = $9.

Friday Churchill Race No. 4.  Post time 2:36 P.M. Eastern.  The Street Sense   An eight furlong dirt stake race restricted to two year-olds. Purse = $100K.
Handicappers look for positive, forward moving signs. Sometimes you encounter backward moving signs.  For example, after breaking his maiden at Saratoga this summer, #4 “Unionizer” (8-1) was sent to the Jersey Shore for a $75K race which he did win. The fact that he was not sent to The Hopeful, a stakes race at Saratoga, speaks volumes.  Then, both he and #5 “Moonster” (8-1) had all kinds of trouble in the same race at Keeneland on October 6th.  The betting public will probably jump on Bob Baffert’s #2 “Improbable” (5-2) who had a speedy maiden breaker at Santa Anita followed by some speedy works in the morning. The question is why did this colt miss the summer?
Finally, Johnny V. takes the ride on #7 “Manny Wah” (6-1) who makes his sixth start today.  Each race has been a gradual step in the right direction.  This is the first foal of his dam who won $149K on the track. His maternal grand dam also dropped “Lookin at Lee” in 2014 and “Blended Citizen” in 2015.  He’s the pick.
The wagers:  $3 Win and Place #7, then $2 Double #7 with #8 in the next race - - turf only.  Total = $8.

TV Coverage today.  From 3 P.M. until 7 P.M. on NBCSN.

Friday Churchill Race No. 5.The Juvenile Turf Sprint.  A 5 ½ furlong turf race for two year-old fillies.  Purse:  $1 Million. Post time: 3:21 P.M. Eastern.
Last year’s winner: None.  New race this year.
First of all, there is a possibility that this race will not be run on the turf due to the forecasted rains.
Trying to pick a winner of a two year old sprint stake is nearly impossible, but maybe this wallet will get lucky with #8 “Sergei Prokofiev” (6-1) who fetched $1.1 Million in the sales ring.  The turf-only wager:  $2 W/P/S #8, then $2 Double #8 with 6/12.  Total = $10 and turn the page.

Friday Churchill Race No. 6.  The Juvenile Filly Turf.  An 8 furlong turf race for two year old fillies. Purse:  $1 Million.  Post time: 4:00 P.M. Eastern.
Last year’s winner: “Rushing Fall”.  Owned by e Five Racing Thoroughbreds, trained by Chad Brown, and ridden by Javier Castellano.  Winning odds: 3 to 1.
There is no question that Chad’s #6 “Newspaperofrecord” (2-1) is the filly to beat.  She is strictly the one to catch after showing her ability in “The Miss Grillo” on a wet turf course (which is what she will get again today).  However, this filly’s dam side cannot be labeled as “strong” when those morning line odds are factored into the equation.
Next, #3 “Lily’s Candle” (8-1) surprised everybody in a Group 1 at Longchamps just four weeks ago.  It is hard to leave this filly off a ticket when she fetched $450K in the sales ring at Saint Cloud - - but she also does not add Lasix giving this wallet a reason to leave her off of that ticket.  Next, the Magnier/Tabor/Smith trio send #4 “Just Wonderful” (6-1) back to where she was born after going 3 for 6 in Europe.  She was humiliated in her lone Group 1 start, which certainly does not get the blood boiling. Finally, Thomas Proctor’s #12 “Summering” (15-1) was orphaned when her dam “Wishing Gate” died after foaling her. By the way, “Wishing Gate” won $374K on the track and her dam “Rich in Spirit” won over $600K on the track. Notice that “Summering” continues to move forward in her races.  In her last race she was forced to wait for room which slowed her down when making her run. Will “Summering” win?  Probably not but she deserves consideration here.
First choice:  #12 “Summering” at 15-1 or more.
Second choice:  #6 “Newspaperofrecord”.
The wagers:
$1 Pick 3:  6/12 w 10 w 5/14.
Then $0.50 Pick 4: 6/12 w 10 w 5/14 w 4/9.
Then $2 Double 6/12 w 10.
Finally, $2 W/P/S #12.
Total = $20.

Friday Churchill Race No. 7.The Juvenile Filly.  An 8 ½ furlong dirt race for two year-old fillies.  Purse:  $2 Million. Post time: 4:40 P.M. Eastern.
Last year’s winner: “Caledonia Road”.  Trained by Ralph Nicks and ridden by Mike Smith.  Winning odds:  17-1.
On September 29that Santa Anita, #10 “Bellafina” (2-1) beat four rivals.  Finishing second in that race was #3 “Vibrance” (10-1).  Let’s look for a repeat performance.
First choice:  #10 “Bellafina”.
Second choice: #3 “Vibrance”.
The wagers:
While there is a Special Double of combining the winner of this race with tomorrow’s Race No. 9 “The Distaff”, I will not be using this double.
First, $2 Straight exacta #10 beating #3.
Next, $0.50 Pick 4:  10 w 5/14 w 4/9 w 8.
Next, $1 Pick 3:  10 w 5/14 w 4/9.
Next, $1 Trifecta:  10 w 3/4 w 3/4.
Finally, $3 Double:  #10 in this race with both #5 and #14 in the next race.
Total = $16.

Friday Churchill Race No. 8.  The Juvenile Turf.  An 8 furlong turf race for two year olds.  Purse:  $1 Million. Post time:  5:22 P.M. Eastern.
Last year’s winner: “Mendelssohn”.  Owned by Tabor, Magnier, and Smith, trained by Aidan O’Brien, and ridden by Ryan Moore.  Winning odds: 4.80 to 1.
There is more than one reason to like #14 “Anthony Van Dyck” (4-1). The obvious reason is that his trainer and jockey won this race last year with “Mendelssohn”.  The other is not so obvious.  This colt’s dam also dropped the Australian filly “Bounding” in 2010. She sold as a broodmare for $1.9 million.  So the breeding is there but the most recent performance on “good footing” has the comment “no extra, outpaced”.  Thus, buyer beware.
Next, there is nothing I would like more than to see former Giants’ coach Bill Parcells in the winner’s circle with #4 “Forty Under” (5-1).  Don’t see it happening but you never know.
Finally, #5 “Line of Duty” (10-1) has won his last two races - - one in England, the last in France.  His owner, trainer, and jockey won last year’s Filly and Mare Turf with “Wuheida” at odds of 11-1, so why not again?
First choice:  #5 “Line of Duty” (10-1)
Second Choice:  #14 “Anthony Van Dyck” (4-1).
The wagers:
While there is a Special Double of combining the winner of this race with tomorrow’s Race No. 10 “The Turf”, I will not be using this double.
Next:  $2 Double #5 and #14 in this race with both #4 and #9 in the next race. This is an $8 wager.
Then, $1 Exacta Box 5/14.
Then $3 Place #5.
Total = $13.

Friday Churchill Race No. 9.  The Juvenile.  An 8 ½ furlong dirt race for two year olds.  Purse:  $2 Million. Post time:  6:05 P.M. Eastern.
Last year’s winner: “Good Magic”.  Trained by Chad Brown and ridden by Jose Ortiz.  Winning odds:  11.50 to 1.

Blogger’s Note: It has been many years - - so many that I cannot remember - - since a winner has been picked for this race. Readers of this blog should take note of this lack of success in The Juvenile.

Looking at the analytics, this is a two horse race featuring Chad’s undefeated #6 “Complexity” (5-2) and Bob Baffert’s undefeated #9 “Game Winner” (8-5).  Throw in Shug’s #11 “Code of Honor” (5-1) and you have a good chance to cash a trifecta ticket.  However, this is a two-turn race - - something that neither #6 nor #11 has tried. In addition, #9 has not raced quickly out west although that October 26tha.m. workout was outstanding.
Will the winner come from one of these three?  There is a 50% chance that will not happen so the search is elsewhere - - to trainer Steve Asmussen’s #4 “Tight Ten” (30-1) who has not raced poorly in his three starts.  The October 14thand October 20tha.m. workouts show fitness and he does have a win over the track (albeit six months ago against weak competition).  Still, this “Tapit” colt, with a maternal grand dam of “Fleet Renee”, is not without a chance.
First Choice:  #9 “Game Winner”
Second Choice:  #4 “Tight Ten”
The wagers:
$2 Double:  #4 and #9 in this race with #8 in today’s 10thrace.
$2 Special Double:  #4 and #9 in this race with #10 in tomorrow’s 11thrace (The Classic).
Then $1 Exacta Box 4/9.
Then $0.50 Trifecta Box: 4/6/9.
Then $0.50 Trifecta Box:  4/9/11.
Finally, $3 Place #4.
Total = $19.

Friday Churchill Race No. 10.Post time 6:43 P.M. Eastern.  The Marathon. A 14 furlong dirt race with a purse of $200K.
Trainers Ian Wilkes (#7 “Big Dollar Bill” (5-1)) and Bob Baffert (#2 “Dabster (9-2)) have both kept their horses competing in the minor leagues. Why should we expect a major league effort on such a big day?  Next, can we trust #6 “War Story” (4-1) after flunking as the favorite on September 30th?  The pick is Jose’s #8 “Honorable Duty” (4-1) who took the hot summer off and returned with a decent effort on September 29th.  Yes, the track will probably still be listed as “muddy”, a factor which could help him more that some of the other entrants.
The wager on this non-Breeders Cup Race:  $4 Win and Place #8.  Total = $8.

Total wagers for Friday, November 2nd= $112

Weather Watch..  The weather improves some on Saturday.  Thus, the main track could be listed as “good” early, then “fast” later in the day.  The turf course might go from “yielding” to “soft” during the day on Saturday.

Saturday Churchill Race No. 1.Post time 10:45 A.M. Eastern.  An 8 ½ furlong dirt race. Purse $82K.
Pass.  No selection. No wager.  Just too early.

Saturday Churchill Race No. 2.Post time 11:15 A.M. Eastern.   The Cherokee Run Stakes.  A seven furlong dirt sprint restricted to three year-olds.  Purse:  $200K.
Earlier in the year, trainer Dale Romans was “high” on #6 “Mr Freeze” (12-1).  Note that this colt was beaten by over twenty lengths in his last start - - a race at nine furlongs.  Today’s distance will suit him much better.  Next, the morning line favorite has not been seen in six months.  Eh - - no thanks.  Next, the apparent “horse to beat” is Bob Baffert’s #12 “Super Sol” (4-1) and no, do not expect 4-1 odds on this guy - - 3-1 at most.  The a.m. workouts look good too.
First choice:  #12 “Super Sol” (4-1)
Second choice:  #6 “Mr Freeze” (12-1).
The wagers:
$1 Exacta Box 6/12.
$2 Win #12.
$0.50 Pick 4:  6/12 w 13 w 5 w 10.
Total = $5.

Saturday Churchill Race No. 3.   The Filly and Mare Sprint.  A 7 furlong sprint.  Purse: $1 Million.  Post time: 12:00 P.M. Eastern.
Last year’s winner: “Bar of Gold”.  Owned by Chester and Mary Broman, trained by John Kimmel, and ridden by Irad Ortiz, Jr.  Winning odds: 67 to 1.
First, we have not seen #1 “Selcourt” (4-1) since March.  Eh - - no thanks.  Note that “Selcourt” is the last filly to beat #13 “Marley’s Freedom” (8-5) and she has not lost since.  For completing the exacta, there are two picks:  #12 “Anonymity” (15-1) just because trainer Richard Mandella never ships out of California, and #6 “Chalon” (15-1) just because this filly has an underrated trainer.
First choice:  #13 “Marley’s Freedom” (8-5).
The wagers:
$1 Exacta #13 beating either #6 or #12.
$2 Double #13 with #5.
$1 Pick 3:  13 w 5 w 10.
Total = $5.

Saturday Churchill Race No. 4.  The Turf Sprint.  A 5 ½ furlong turf sprint.  Purse: $1 Million.  Post time:  12:38 P.M.
Last year’s winner: “Stormy Liberal”.  Trained by Peter Miller and ridden by Joel Rosario. Winning odds:  30 to 1. Last year’s distance was 5 furlongs at Del Mar.
While last year’s winner #9 “Stormy Liberal” (4-1) is here, the pick is #5 “Disco Partner” (7-2).  Yes, he has only won twice this year but he should be formidable in the lane.
First choice:  #5 “Disco Partner” (7-2).
No second choice.
The wagers:
$2 Win #5.
$2 Double #5 with #10.
$1 Pick 3:  5 w 10 w 3/10.
$0.50 Pick 4:  5 w 10 w 3/10 w 2/5.
Total = $8.

Television Coverage Begins.
NBCSN from 1 P.M. until 3:30 P.M, then
NBC from 3:30 P.M. until 6:00 P.M.

Saturday Churchill Race No. 5. The Dirt Mile. An 8 furlong dirt race.  Purse:  $1 Million. Post time:  1:16 P.M. Eastern.
Last year’s winner: “Battle of Midway”.  Owned by Don Alberto and WinStar, trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, and ridden by Flavian Prat.  Winning odds: 14-1.
The well-travelled #1 “City of Light” (5-2) will be formidable.  So will #10 “Catalina Cruiser” (8-5). Forget the rest.
First choice:  #10 “Catalina Cruiser”.
The wagers:
$2 Double #10 with #3.
$1 Pick 3:  10 w 3/10 w 2/5.
Total = $6.

Saturday Churchill Race No. 6.  The Filly and Mare Turf.  An 11 furlong grass race for fillies and mares.  Purse:  $2 Million. Post time:  2:04 P.M. Eastern.
Last year’s winner: “Wuheida”.  Owned by Godolphin Stable Lessee, trained by Charles Appleby, and ridden by William Buick.  Winning odds: 11-1. Last year’s distance was 9 furlongs.
First of all, do not underestimate the importance of the post-position draw of #1 “Fourstar Crook” (5-1).  This mare will save ground and, with the right kind of trip, could surprise at a price.  She is always “game” in the stretch.
Next, #3 “Wild Illusion” (7-2) has the same owner, trainer, and jockey of last year’s winner of this race.  Notice that this year’s race is two furlongs longer and this three year old fits right in with that distance.  Next, finishing second to “Wild Illusion” in October was #10 “Magic Wand” (5-1).  She was only a length behind in a field of Europe’s sixteen best fillies.  Finally, Chad’s #6 “Sistercharlie” (3-1) has banked nearly $1 million this year alone.  She is definitely the one to beat.  This wallet favors the Euros.
First choice:  #3 “Wild Illusion” (7-2).
Second choice:  #10 “Magic Wand”
The wagers:
$2 W/P/S #3.
$1 Exacta Box 3/10.
$1 exacta #3 with 6/10.
$0.50 Trifecta Box 3/6/10.
$2 Double #3 with both #2 and #5 in the next race.
$2 Pick 6:  3 w 2/5 w 7 w 7 w 2 w 10/14.
Total = $25.

Saturday Churchill Race No. 7.  The Sprint.  A 6 furlong dirt race.  Purse: $2 Million.  Post time: 2:46 P.M. Eastern.
Last year’s winner: “Roy H”.  Trained by Peter Miller and ridden by Kent Desormeaux. Winning odds:  4.90 to 1. Last year’s distance was 6 furlongs.
This wallet has picked #5 “Imperial Hint” (9-5) in all five of his races this year, so there is no reason to stop.  Next, there is no way anyone can ignore #2 “Promises Fulfilled” (6-1) who is owned locally by Robert Baron.  This three year old won the Allen Jerkens (formerly The Kings Bishop) at Saratoga, as did “Runhappy”, the 2015 winner of The Sprint.  Horses do mature in their three year old season so “Promises Fulfilled” is a “must use”.
First choice:  #5 “Imperial Hint” (9-5)
Second choice:  #2 “Promises Fulfilled” (6-1)
The wagers:
$1 Exacta Box 2/5.
$2 Exacta #5 beating #2.
$2 Double:  #2 and #5 with #7 in the next race.
$1 Pick 3:  2/5 w 7 w 7/9.
$0.50 Pick 5:  5 w 4/7 w 7 w 2 w 10/14.
Total = $14.

Saturday Churchill Race No. 8.  The Mile.  An 8 furlong turf race.  Purse: $2 Million.  Post time:  3:36 P.M. Eastern.
Last year’s winner: “World Approval”.  Owned by Live Oak Plantation, trained by Mark Casse, and ridden by John Velasquez.  Winning odds: 2.70 to 1.
This wallet has a rule:  Any entrant that runs at Deauville, France gets a second look. Any entrant that wins at Deauville gets bet.  Following that rule, the filly #4 “Polydream” (5-1) will be on tickets.  Next, the jockey of #7 “Expert Eye” (8-1) is Lanfranco Dettori (a.k.a “Frankie”), one of Europe’s best for the past 20+ years.  He rides “Enable” in today’s tenth race.  At this point in his career, Frankie can pick and choose, so you know that his choice has a better-than-average chance.  To finish third, the choice is #13 “Gustav Klimt” (10-1) who has “danced every dance” this year banking $443K in Europe - - which is no small task.
First choice:  #7 “Expert Eye” (8-1)
Second choice:  #4 “Polydream” (5-1)
Include in trifecta:  #13 “Gustav Klimt” (10-1).
The wagers:
$2 W/P/S #7.
$2 Double #7 with both #7 and #9.
$1 Pick 3:  7 w 7/9 w 2.
$0.50 Pick 4:  4/7 w 7 w 2 w 10/14.
$0.50 Trifecta:  4/7 w 4/7 w 13.
$1 Exacta Box 4/7.
Total = $17.

Saturday Churchill Race No. 9.  The Distaff.  A 9 furlong dirt race for fillies and mares.  Purse:  $2 Million. Post time:  4:16 P.M. Eastern.
Last year’s winner: “Forever Unbridled”.  Owned by Charles Fipke, trained by Dallas Stewart, and ridden by John Velasquez.  Winning odds: 3.70 to 1.
We just are not sure what happened to both #2 “Abel Tasman” (7-2) and “Monomy Girl” (2-1) in their most recent races.  The former did not want to be at Santa Anita that day while the latter appeared to tire with about one furlong to the wire.  In the “not tiring” category are #3 “La Force” (20-1) and #9 “Wow Cat” (8-1).  The former, with only one victory this year, has earned nearly $300K. The latter ran her eyeballs out in the Beldame on October 6th.  The pick is Johnny V.’s #7 “Midnight Bisou” (6-1) who may not be the flashiest of fillies but she is a grinder.  If she does not stumble out of the gate this time, she has a real chance.
First choice:  #7 “Midnight Bisou” (6-1)
Second choice:  #9 “Wow Cat” (8-1).
The wagers:
$2 W/P/S #7.
$2 Double #7 w #2.
$1 Exacta Box 7/9.
$1 Pick 3:  7 w 2/12 w 10/14.
$0.50 Pick 4:  7 w 2/5/12 w 10/14 w 6.
Total = $18.

Saturday Churchill Race No. 10.  The Turf.  A 12 furlong grass race.  Purse:  $4 Million. Post time: 4:56 P.M. Eastern.
Last year’s winner: “Talismanic”, an English bred.  Owned Godolphin Stable Lessee, trained by Andre Fabre, and ridden by Mickael Barzalona.  Winning odds:  14 to 1.
John Gosden’s filly #2 “Enable” (1-1) is a dual winner of the Prix d’la Arc d’Triomphe, once at Chantilly, then at Longchamps.  However, no winner of “The Arc” has won this race - - ever.  She is a “must use” in multi-race wagers.  Next, trainer Andre Fabre brings two:  last year’s winner #1 “Talismanic” (12-1) and the very accomplished #12 “Waldgeist” (9-2).  The former has only found success in minor European races while the latter has won four times and finished second in this year’s “Arc” to “Enable”.  Finally, the most intriguing entrant is the Magnier, Tabor, & Smith filly #5 “Magical” (10-1) who finished five lengths behind “Enable” in the Arc, then two weeks later won a three year-old filly stake at Royal Ascot over soft turf, and two weeks later shows up here.  She looks capable enough to contend.
First choice:  #2 “Enable” (1-1)
Second choice:  #12 “Waldgeist” (9-2)
Co-second choice:  #5 “Magical” (10-1).
The wagers:
$2 Double:  Both #2 and #5 in this race with #10 and #14 in the next race.
Then:  $1 Pick 3: 2/5/12 w 10/14 w 6.
Total = $14.

Saturday Churchill Race No. 11.  The Classic.  A 10 furlong dirt race.  Purse: $6 Million.  Post time 5:44 P.M. Eastern.
Last year’s winner: “Gun Runner”.  Owned by Winchell & Three Chimneys, trained by Steve Asmussen, and ridden by Florent Geroux.  Winning odds: 2.40 to 1.
There is plenty of early speed entered in this race today.  The pundits will have good reason to talk about “The Big 3”:
- #14 “Accelerate” (5-2)
- #7 “West Coast” (5-1), and
- #11 “Mind Your Biscuits” (6-1).
The horse to beat is #14 “Accelerate” who will be forwardly placed. Remember, the run to the first turn is long - - and a horse with tactical speed like “Accelerate” should be O.K. going into that first turn.  The operative word is “should”.  With so much speed entered, “Accelerate” could encounter real problems.  Thus, those 5-2 odds are not for this wallet.  Of course, “Accelerate” is a “must use” in multi-race wagers.
Next, it seems like “forever ago” that #3 “Catholic Boy” (8-1) won The Travers at Saratoga.  That day he was forwardly placed, the fractions were honest, and he had “some left in the tank” to kick for the wire.

Note:  As a graduate of Bishop Timon High, St. Bonaventure U., and Canisius College, I would love to pick #3 “Catholic Boy”. However, pedigree plays a huge role in this wallet’s handicapping.  Offspring of “More Than Ready” just do not win ten furlong dirt races.  “Right or Wrong” (stolen from trainer Nick Zito).

So, if there is a better-than-even chance that #14 “Accelerate” will encounter traffic problems in the first turn, logic says to select a horse with a post closer to the rail, or select a horse that can kick for home, a.k.a. “a closer”.  This wallet picks #10 “Yoshida” (10-1), trained by Bill Mott and ridden by Jose (because Joel is riding #14 “Accelerate”).  Will he win? Probably not but he is not without a chance and his odds will be “north” of 10-1.
The wagers:
$2 W/P/S #10, then
$1 Exacta Box 10/14.
Then $2 Double:  10/14 w 6.

To Panamanian Readers

August 1,1968 is a date I fondly remember. It was 50 years ago that I landed in the Panama Canal Zone.  The charter jet, owned by Howard Hughes, landed at the now abandoned Howard AFB which was located on the opposite side of the Bridge of the Americas (also known as The Thatcher Ferry Bridge).  For the next eighteen months, I lived at Fort Amador - - now merely known as Amador.

Ten years ago I went back to Panama on a Road Scholar (previously known as Elderhostel) tour, which was outstanding.  Helping to make that trip outstanding was guide Archie Kirshman. Since taking over the Canal Zone from the U.S., the Panamanian people have done wonders.  I was in awe and long to return one more time.

The blog stats show 1% of all readers hail from Panama.  To you unknown persons, let me just say that you are lucky to be living in such a beautiful country.   Also, welcome to the blog.
