 Post-script to 2013 Breeders’ Cup

Winners and Losers

The Winners:

NY-based Jeremiah Englehart, trainer of Ria Antonia in the Juvenile Fillies race.  This filly was moved up when the winner was DQ’d.

European shippers.

Breeders’ Cup.  Attendance Friday was 36,000, handle was $52 million.  Attendance Saturday was 59,000, handle was $110 million.

Racing fans.  They saw quality, competitive races.  Who said racing is dead?

The Losers:

Jockey John Velazquez who required emergency surgery due to internal bleeding.  May God be with him.

Trainer Chad Brown who saddled 10 entrants but won no races.

Trainer Todd A. Pletcher who saddled 8 entrants but won no races.

Me - - who picked 2 winners but did not cash a ticket for two days.

And finally, all of those paid pundits who told us that “Royal Delta” would definitely win The Distaff.  Those that didn’t - - and they were a few - - told us that “Princess of Sylmar” would beat “Royal Delta”.
