Post-Script to the 2014 Breeders’ Cup (October 31 - November 1, 2014)

As previously said, this blogger attended both days with his friends Harry and Harry - - and we were glad we brought jackets.  Both afternoons did warm up some - - but the jacket did come in handy.

The venue for this event is superb - - Santa Anita really knows how to do it.  This was my fourth Breeders Cup at Santa Anita and I do believe this is the best place for this event.  One problem was food vendors - - not enough of them.  I missed two November 1st races due to standing in line for a good $8 roast beef sandwich, then to a different vendor for a cup of coffee.  Next time I’ll stop at a deli before going to the track.

Winners and Losers:

Winners were:
Trainer Chad Brown.  He had horses in 6 Breeders’ Cup races and had 3 winners and 1 second.
Trainer Bob Baffert.  He had horses in many races but won only 1, i.e. The Classic with “Bayern”.
The sire “City Zip”.  He sired two winners:  “Dayatthespa” in the Filly and Mare Turf and “Work All Week” in the Sprint.

Losers were:
The Game itself.  “Bayern” should have been disqualified by the stewards.  The stewards’ failure to act was, in this blogger’s mind, criminal.  (Note:  my selection in this race was unaffected by the “Bayern” incident.)
Trainer Todd Pletcher.  He had five horses in three races and only managed one second place finish.
Trainer Bill Mott.  He had 7 horses in 6 races and did not hit the board.
Me.  While I did select only two winners (“Goldencents” and “Untapable”), I never cashed a ticket.

Next year the Breeders’ Cup moves to Keeneland - - and I will not go there.  Instead, I’ll wait for the Breeders’ Cup to return to Southern California where the weather is usually perfect.
